Center for Constitutionalism

The Center for Constitutionalism undertakes and promotes innovative legal and interdisciplinary research on all aspects of constitutional law in Lithuania and comparative constitutional law in Europe and worldwide.

Particular attention is paid to the following thematic areas:

  • comparative constitutionalism and constitutional justice,
  • the interaction of national and European systems of human rights protection,
  • the relationship between the Constitution and international and EU law,
  • supranational constitutionalism,
  • concepts of national and European constitutional identities,
  • democratisation and transitional constitution-building.

The Center was established at the Faculty of Law in 2023 under the initiative and leadership of the Dean of the Faculty of Law, prof. Dainius Žalimas, who currently serves as the Head of the Center.

The Center‘s mission

At the heart of the Center’s mission is to promote the core values of modern constitutionalism, such as a pluralistic democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.

The Center’s activities

The Center’s activities include:

  • high-level national, regional, and global scientific research on relevant topics of constitutional law and their dissemination,
  • development of international and national cooperation between academics, practitioners, and other subjects with the aim of fostering and developing the values of constitutional democracy,
  • research-based innovative education of future leaders to foster the values of modern constitutionalism and active civil society,
  • giving support to countries and societies undergoing processes of transition to democracy, especially the countries of the Eastern Partnership of the European Union, by sharing knowledge and experience through education, consulting, and training,
  • increasing public awareness in the areas of constitutional law, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law,
  • providing the public with accurate, reliable, and timely information on topical issues of constitutional law, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.

The Center’s team have developed strong relations of cooperation with the international Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), European Humanitarian University (Lithuania), Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University (Ukraine), Ivan Franco National University of Lviv (Ukraine), University of Latvia, University of Tartu (Estonia), National Taiwan University, and 1other national and international institutions.
